about

When I began my project “Norwegian Song” in 2006, it was with a desire to seek inspiration in Norwegian music. I have been deeply involved with American jazz for most of my musical life, and now I wanted to try and create a symbiosis of the Norwegian and the American. I have found it to be a tremendously rewarding journey. I think it is inspiring to work with the music of my fellow Bergen townsman, Edvard Grieg. For several years I have focused on arranging and adapting Norwegian folk music and compositions of Grieg for a jazz trio format, and with time I have broadened this to combine the jazz trio with a string quartet.

I was pleased and proud when I was asked by Bergen Big Band (BBB) to make a recording to present my music and my arrangements. I have been a member of BBB for many years, and have witnessed how a wide variety
of projects have been carried out in the most fantastic ways. Through the band’s collaboration with major international big-band leaders such as Maria Schneider, Paquito de Rivera, John Surman and Joe Henderson, the ensemble has grown and developed a very special sense of teamwork.
There have been many memorable concerts and outstanding recordings throughout the years. With this CD I am hoping to help preserve the treasure trove of Norwegian song, and at the same time draw the attention of more listeners to the music of Edvard Grieg.
